The debate on tax avoidance is
gathering momentum, but will G20 leaders take action at Northern Ireland
summit, asks Sara White
First the Public Accounts Committee started investigating the
tax status and contributions of multinationals, with major players
like Google, Amazon and Starbucks probed and interrogated over their
international tax activity. Then it was the Big Four and the tax lawyers.
Now the House of Lords has convened a series of hearings on taxing
corporations in a global economy, which asks whether a new approach
is needed. The agenda is rather ambitious, covering everything from
assessing what proportion of tax receipts should come from corporation
tax to questioning whether the current complex definition of profits
is the right basis for calculating corporation tax.
