With just under a week to go before the close of the 2016 summer transfer window, Premier League football clubs have broken the transfer spending record for the fourth summer in a row and are on course to hit the £1bn mark, according to research by Deloitte

The firm’s sports business group calculates that gross spending by the UK’s top currently stands at £880m, compared to £685m at the same stage last year.

Deloitte says this means total transfer spending in the current window has now broken the record of £870m, set in the summer 2015 transfer window.

Premier League net spending stands at £465m (£345m at the same stage in 2015).

Dan Jones, partner and head of the sports business group at Deloitte, said: ‘Buoyed by the prospect of increased revenue from the new broadcast deals, clubs’ gross spending has now passed last year’s record of £870m.

’With the third round of games in the new Premier League season to come this weekend and a number of clubs keen to strengthen with a view to competing in European and domestic cup competitions, total spending in this window will likely break the £1bn barrier for the first time.’
