In part two of our mini series on maternity leave, Stacie Cheadle, technical writer at Croner, explains the rules on internal vacancies and keeping staff informed
A. Do you have to inform an employee on maternity leave about internal vacancies?
I work for a management consultancy and we operate a number of teams with expertise in different business areas (eg, finance, marketing, HR). At present one of the marketing team members is on maternity leave. She has had her baby, and has eight months of maternity leave remaining.
The marketing team leader has resigned and will leave the organisation in two months. We are currently looking to replace him. We have advertised internally in accordance with company policy. One of the current marketing team has applied, but is not a very strong candidate and hence we think that we might need to advertise externally.
