Employee mileage claims need to be accurate to avoid an unwelcome visit from an HMRC inspector, says Paul Jackson

The company accountant was stunned. The A4 sheets laid out across his desk were densely annotated with coloured highlighter marks. Some green, few yellow and many red.

They were employees’ business mileage logs, which the tax office had requested from the business following a routine audit. Now the taxman was back with them – and the marks clearly signalled that the company was in trouble.
