Scottish councils face growing financial challenges

Councils across Scotland faced significant challenges during 2021/22 and are now entering the most turbulent budget setting period seen for many years

The Accounts Commission, an independent body that holds Scottish councils to account, has revealed that even with additional Covid-19 funding during 2021/22, councils had to make significant savings last year to balance their budgets.

The report provides an independent analysis of the financial performance of councils in Scotland during 2021/22.

It also sets out some of the longer term financial challenges as councils deal with the cost of living crisis.
