Shell rehires EY for £55m audit after eight years

Oil giant Shell has re-appointed EY as auditor after a tender process which means the Big Four firm is likely to exceed the preferred 10-year tenure

EY has been auditor for eight years and was first appointed to the Shell audit account in May 2016 when it took over from fellow Big Four firm PwC.

Subject to shareholder approval, EY has secured its position as statutory auditor for Shell for an extended period likely to run beyond the usual 10-year rotation.

The company confirmed EY has been reappointed and will audit the business for the next few years, including the financial statements for the financial year ending 31 December 2026.

As one of the largest and most complex audits, it is not surprising that longer audit tenures are favoured by Shell. This audit tender was first announced in 2023, so it has taken up to two years to conclude.
