The one-off tax would also provide a £14,000 cash grant to all 114 million people who were made unemployed during the pandemic.
According to analysis by Oxfam, the Fight Inequality Alliance, the Institute for Policy Studies, and the Patriotic Millionaires, the cost of vaccinating the world’s adult population is around £50.5bn and the billionaire’s tax would raise £4 trillion, this would still leave the world’s 2,690 billionaires £40bn richer than before the virus struck.
To give the one-off £14,000 cash grant to all workers currently unemployed would cost £3.2 trillion.
The groups are calling on governments across the world to introduce this one-off levy stating that billionaire wealth has increased more over the last 17 months than it had in the 15 years prior, with 325 new billionaires having joined the Forbes Billionaire Club since the pandemic began.
