Several thousand members of the public have given their verdict on the chancellor’s tax policies, with some surprises about what they like and dislike.

Some of the tax rises have been better received than others over the past year. For example, when employers’ national insurance contributions increased there was a very negative reaction from businesses, while the decision to impose VAT on school fees was popular with the public with less than one in four opposed.

Research from AJ Bell shows the most disliked tax raising measure is taxing unused pension pots through inheritance tax (IHT) with only 21% of British people supporting the proposal, and 44% opposed it outright. However, this isn’t coming in until 2027 so there is plenty of time for another u-turn.
