Tax take soars by £72.6bn year-on-year as debt rises

HMRC’s multi-billion-pound take ‘not enough to plug the growing black hole of government debt’

Tax take for the 2025-26 tax year has reached £860.7bn with one more revenue collecting month to go, higher than the same April to February period last year, when it stood at £788.1bn. Meantime, government borrowing is increasing again as public sector spending increases.

The stark increase in the tax take highlights the ongoing threshold freezes and across the board tax increases hitting not only businesses but also individual PAYE taxpayers and the self employed.
