The taxman has come under fire to do more to tell people that they may be under the wrong tax code. HM Revenue & Customs sent out 25m coding notices this year, double the number sent last year, but many of these are wrong as a result of an error within its PAYE system, the Chartered Institute of Taxation says. 'Most people on PAYE are used to assuming that what the taxman sends them is correct,' said Andrew Hubbard, president of the CIOT. 'Many file away coding notices without even bothering to check them.' The CIOT is urging government to put this information more into the public domain, as those affected by the wrong tax code will see hundreds of pounds deducted from their April pay packet.
