Twitter hacker told to pay back £4.1m bitcoin

A Twitter hacker who hijacked accounts of celebrities including Barack Obama and Jeff Bezos forced to repay over £4m

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has ordered Liverpool born, Joseph James O’Connor, 26, known online as ‘PlugwalkJoe’ to pay back millions in stolen bitcoin.

O’Connor is currently serving a five-year jail sentence in the US for his involvement in a wide array of cybercrime offences. This included stealing bitcoin and threatening celebrities with the release of personal images and messages. He was prosecuted in the US in June 2023 after being extradited from Spain while he was stuck there on holiday during Covid.
