A septuagenarian whisky-quaffing accountant careered into a parked car and a wall after a "few tots of whisky", a court has heard.

72-year-old Huw Jones FCA, of Tower Hill, Ffynnonddrain, was banned from driving for three years at Carmarthen magistrates court last Wednesday.

The pensioner pleaded guilty to a charge of driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Prosecutor Ellie Morgan said: 'On 22 August the defendant was travelling on Elim Road, Carmarthen and collided with a parked car and garden wall.'

She said a resident came out of their home as the Skoda Octavia careered across the road; and opened the driver's side door and removed the keys from the ignition as Jones was revving the engine in an attempt to get away.

'The police were then contacted and Jones failed to give a breath test. He was arrested for this reason,' she added.

'The defendant admitted to having a "few tots of whisky".'

Jones was more than twice the legal limit and was found to have 74 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

The legal limit is 35.

Defence solicitor Aled Owen said Jones was remorseful for his actions.

He explained Jones had met a client for lunch and misjudged how much alcohol was in his system.

The offence was Jones's second drink-drive offence in 10 years, which means he faced a three-year ban.

Magistrates also slapped Jones with a £1,000 fine and ordered him to pay £85 court costs, along with a £15 victim surcharge.
