World Cup boosts GDP by 0.1% in November

The UK economy grew 0.1% in November as people headed to the pubs to watch the World Cup and retailers benefited in the run-up to Christmas

GDP rose by 0.1% in November, following growth of 0.5% the previous month, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

November’s partial recovery, which was unexpectedly stronger than forecast, was mostly explained by a boost in retail shopping and consumer spending in bars and pubs. Economists had predicted a negative growth figure of around 0.2%.

The services sector saw a 0.2% rise in output, following a growth of 0.7% in September 2022. The largest contribution towards consumer-facing services came from food and beverage activities, which grew by 2.2% - notably when the World Cup started.
