Taxpayers remained in the party spirit this year with 8,390 (34%) less people choosing to submit their self-assessment tax return online on New Years Eve, compared to last year’s record breaking figure of 24,546
More people, instead, decided to start 2017 by being more organised and completing their self assessment, with 1587 (13%) more people filing on New Year’s Day than last year.
The busiest day between Christmas and New Year was Friday 30 December, where a huge 34,166 people submitted their tax return to avoid any unwanted penalties.
Less people decided to complete their return on Christmas Day 2016, with 1,944 forms submitted compared to 2,044 on Christmas Day 2015.
However, more taxpayers chose to complete their self assessment return on Boxing Day with HMRC reporting a 15% increase.
The deadline for sending 2015-16 tax returns to HMRC, and paying any tax owed, is 31 January 2017.
