500k self assessment refunds ‘sat in limbo’

Half a million taxpayers are still waiting for refunds from overpaid tax from self assessment tax returns for tax year 2019-20, although HMRC fraud checks create some of the delays

According to data obtained by Saffery Champness, 502,051 self assessment repayments from overpaid tax sat in limbo waiting to be issued throughout 2020-21.

The latest figures, obtained from HMRC through a Freedom of Information request (FOI), showed that the total number of self assessment repayments to taxpayers made by HMRC from overpayment of tax sat at 2.7m for 2020-21, however, 3.2m repayments were due meaning that HMRC only successfully cleared 84% of the payments owed. However, HMRC stressed that many of the delays are the result of fraud checks to ensure that claims are legitimate.
