70% of BTL landlords delay purchases over tax fears

With capital gains tax almost certain to go up at the Budget, 77% of buy to let landlords are concerned about the future of their investments

Over 90% are worried about hikes in capital gains tax (CGT), with only 7% claiming they were not concerned about how potential tax rises in the Budget would impact their investments. Those who were not bothered about tax hikes were primarily single property landlords rather than owners of multiple property portfolios, revealed a survey of landlords by Butterfield Mortgages.

However, over 70% of landlords said they have been holding off buying any new properties until there is confirmation of any tax rises to come. Just 11% have carried on purchasing new property in the run-up to the Budget.
