The US president, Donald Trump, confirmed Wednesday that plans for sweeping and punitive reciprocal tariffs against 57 countries will be delayed for 90 days, but this will not affect the baseline 10% tariff levied across global imports, or the 25% tariffs on automotive and steel imports.
On Truth Social, the president wrote: ‘I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered reciprocal tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!’
At the same time, China was slapped with 125% tariffs as a result of its counter tariffs announced earlier this week. The president wrote on Truth Social: ‘At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realise that the days of ripping off the U.S.A, and other countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable.’
