Abridged accounts under FRS 102: essential reporting tips

For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2016 (with earlier adoption permitted), small companies have a new option to prepare abridged accounts. Anne Cowley ACA, CCH senior technical writer, considers the options

Abridged accounts consist of a balance sheet and profit and loss account with fewer compulsory headings.

The abridged balance sheet needs only to show items prefixed with letters and roman numerals, with no requirement to show further analysis of these figures in the notes.

This would mean, for example, that investment property would not be shown separately, as it is just an item within tangible assets.

The only proviso is that as these accounts are still required to give a true and fair view, if separate disclosure were needed to achieve this then more detail than shown below would be required.
