Accountants blame lack of testing for MTD delay

The decision to delay the rollout of Making Tax Digital for income tax until 2026 could signal complications with the reporting system and lack of effective trials

While most accountants have welcomed the delay, there are concerns that HMRC is not ready to handle the huge increase in digital reporting which had been expected to net over four million self employed individuals and landlords.

There are also concerns that the delay will have a knock-on effect on the plans for MTD for corporation tax, which are still in the early stages with no guidance issued. It seems likely that the 2026 launch date will have to be deferred.
