Accountants waste 16 days travelling to work

The majority of accountants (89%) are losing up to 16 days each year commuting to and from work with over a third (42%) travelling up to two hours each day, according to research from CV-Library

Despite over three quarters (77%) claiming to enjoy their commute, over two thirds (69%) would be willing to relocate to make their commute shorter and 59% would even turn down a job that required a longer journey.

Out of the 1,200 accountants surveyed 96% travelled to work five days a week. Half of these would like to use their commuting time more wisely as they currently listen to music (25%), read (17%), learn new things (13%), browse social media (8%) and talk to friends (6%).

Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of CV-Library, said: ‘While it’s good to see that many use this time to do recreational activities instead of overworking themselves, it’s clear that many wish they could make better use of this time.

‘However, this could prove difficult for the majority who are stuck behind the wheel during their journey. Working during long commutes, or doing nothing if you’re unable to, brings about the discussion of work-life balance.’

The majority of accountants drive to work (44%) while others take the bus (17%), walk (13%), or take the train or tube (21%).

Biggins said: ‘It’s clear from the data that accounting professionals would like shorter commutes, but this is not always possible or practical. If your commute is taking up a large part of your day, use this time to do things you enjoy, and even to improve your skills or learn something new. With so many apps and new technologies available it’s possible to read, watch TV, or learn another language from pretty much anywhere.’
