IFRS 8: Segment reporting and goodwill

IFRS 8, Operating segments, allows operating segments as defined in IFRS 8, para 5 to be aggregated into a higher level reportable operating segment if certain criteria are met as per IFRS 8, para 12. However, as defined by paragraph 80(b) of IAS 36, Impairment of assets, each cash-generating unit or group of units to which goodwill is allocated should not be larger than an operating segment as defined IFRS 8, para 5 before aggregation. This was an amendment to IAS 36, which was effective for periods beginning on or after 1 January 2010.
