Aged 57 is ‘too old’ to hire, say recruiters

A third of over 50s worry that they will struggle to find work due to age discrimination, with one in seven (15%) being turned down for jobs because of their age

Age bias remains a significant barrier for jobseekers and employers with 59% of recruiters making age-based assumptions and nearly half (46%) considering candidates over 57 ‘too old’, revealed research for Totaljobs, laid out in the Overcoming Age Bias to Hire Experienced Talent report.

Four in 10 HR decision-makers have experienced pressure to hire younger candidates, putting older workers at risk of being overlooked in recruitment.

Additionally, nearly half (47%) believe that a candidate’s age influences their ‘cultural fit’ in the organisation.

As a result, one in five over 50s omit their age from CVs, while a quarter hesitate to apply for jobs as they anticipate potential bias.
