Aligning finance and HR: why is the obvious still a challenge?

It is the duty of the chief human resources officer (CHRO) and chief financial officer (CFO) to ensure that there is a unified workforce within an organisation, yet this does not seem to be the case, says Dee Houchen, senior product marketing director, ERP Apps at Oracle

As finance executives become more strategic partners to their line of business, they are also becoming more active and regular contributors to detailed planning. Organisations understand they need to keep evolving to remain successful, and with their unique understanding of performance across departments there is nobody better placed than finance leaders to transform the company’s operating model.

But a company’s operating model includes much more than finance processes. Its ability to meet growth goals ultimately comes down to its people, the skills they contribute and how productive they are. This is the domain of the CHRO.

It is no secret that salaries and employee costs account for most of an organisation’s operating expenditure. It therefore follows that they want to optimise the way they use this resource, and that requires closer alignment between finance and HR teams on talent management and project planning.
