All tax advisers will have to register with HMRC

In a bid to clamp down on rogue tax practitioners and to stamp out unethical operators, the government will introduce mandatory registration for all tax advisers dealing with HMRC from 2026

Under new rules, any adviser or accountant providing tax-related services and ‘interacting with HMRC will be required to comply with mandatory registration with HMRC from 1 April 2026 to stamp out individuals who offer ‘substandard or unscrupulous tax advice and services’.

The government will go ahead with proposals to regulate tax advisers, expanding tougher regulation of advisers as discussed during the last government and outlined in a lengthy consultation by the Conservatives.

Labour is also considering options to tighten up regulation of the tax advice market, long called for since the professional bodies adopted the Profession Conduct in Relation to Taxation code.
