Conveyancers will have to sign mandatory tax register

Unpopular tax adviser register will capture conveyancers involved in any kind of stamp duty payment

On 25 March, HMRC finalised minutes for a meeting on mandatory tax adviser registration. The focus of the session was on ‘practical impacts, rather than policy intent, particularly for solicitors and conveyancers submitting SDLT returns’.

In the meeting HMRC said the register ‘applies where a business provides tax services to clients (is paid for these services), and interacts with HMRC on behalf of those clients (e.g. submitting returns, claims, or making payments)’.

HMRC since confirmed: 'Filing tax returns for a taxpayer is defined as tax advice and so conveyancers who interact with HMRC on behalf of their clients will be required to register.'
