Gordon Brown has been called upon to create a common set of accounting rules and global regulatory standards by bankers worldwide, ahead of the G-20 summit in London next week.
Brown and the chancellor Alistair Darling hosted a meeting with international bank chiefs last week at Downing Street in preparation of the economic summit, the Financial Times reported.
Chairman and president of Citibank, William Rhodes, said the discussions covered topics considered most important by bankers including accounting issues, regulation, emerging markets and the risk of protectionism.
'We need a global set of accounting standards that would apply worldwide as well as global regulatory norms we also think that having a global regulatory co-ordinating council is necessary,' Rhodes told the FT.
