Banks, pharmacies and pubs dominate high street closures

Nearly 40 high street shops are closing every day as they struggle with rising costs and a drop in general footfall as consumers increasingly move online

Despite the average 38 closures a day, coffee shops and convenience stores are bucking this trend, with high streets seeing a hike in new outlets, revealed the latest PwC high street tracker.

There has been a net decline of 12 outlets a day disappearing from UK high streets with half of all closures coming from chemists, chain pubs and banks. So far this year 6,945 high street retailers have closed.

So far this year there have been 481 chemist closures, and 432 pubs closed, dominated by Boots, Lloyds pharmacies and Wetherspoon’s restructuring their business models and closing stores.

Banks were the next largest hit with closures (247), with more disappearing off of the high street each month, pushing people to online banking. A large number of estate agents (122) have also closed, as well as recruitment agencies (63).
