Begbies Traynor liquidators to recycling company

Paul Stanley and Dean Watson, partners at Begbies Traynor, have been appointed as liquidators to White Recycling Ltd which has closed with the loss of around 70 jobs after a number of financial and regulatory difficulties

Run by brothers David and Steven White, the waste processing business had operating centres in Manchester and Burnley, and a materials recovery plant in Eccles, as well as a fleet of 40 vehicles.

The business was started in 1958 by former chairman Stewart White as a scrap metal processor, and gradually evolved into a recovery and processing firm, rebranding as White Recycling in 2011.

The company had been looking to raise additional funds to improve another site but had failed. It was forced to close when the Environment Agency withdrew its operating licences last week.

Paul Stanley, partner at Begbies Traynor and joint liquidator, said: ‘Firms in the waste processing and disposal sector are finding it increasingly difficult to compete due in part to changes to the regulatory environment, such as the extension of the landfill tax escalator.

‘Although the company’s main assets such as machinery and premises were leased, we are currently talking to several interested parties to see if any parts of the business can be rescued. The leases on the sites have been disclaimed back to the relevant landlords by the liquidators.’
