The UK government's plan for economic recovery after the covid-19 pandemic lacks clear direction, ministerial accountability and responsibility, and has no clear methods to measure its success says the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) committee
The Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) committee released the results of its enquiry into the Post-Pandemic Economic Growth plan which was announced in the March 2021 Budget.
The growth plan replaced former Prime Minister Theresa May’s Industrial Strategy 2017 plan.
The enquiry was launched in Summer 2020 and set out to examine whether the strategy focused on the right sectors, issues and policy areas. The report states in response to the enquiry the government ‘almost immediately’ after said it would revise the Industrial Strategy to take into account covid-19, Brexit, and its climate change commitments.
The committee stated that this ‘sudden and unexpected’ response showed ‘underlined concerns about the government’s commitment to long-term industrial policy’ as the policies were inherited from the previous administration.
