Brexit: shock to the M&A market or business as usual?

Political uncertainty and currency fluctuations since Brexit have dented confidence in the UK mergers and acquisitions (M&A) market but longer term success will depend on what transparency there is over negotiations, and how the markets react, says Richard Smith and Joanne Maitland, Mayer Brown International LLP

It is less than a year since UK voters cast their ballots in the Brexit referendum but on 8 June 2017 they return to polling stations in a general election over which Brexit will loom large again.

In the immediate aftermath of the announcement of the referendum vote on 23 June 2016, the financial markets experienced what some commentators have described as a kneejerk reaction, characterised by a weakening of the pound and a significant drop in share prices.
