Business 'waking up' to climate change

Business is waking up to climate change, according to Ian Powell, senior partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Powell was speaking at the launch of the FTSE Carbon disclosure report ahead of the Copenhagen Climate Summit in December. Respondents to the survey reported the highest ever levels of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to 61% of the UK's total emissions. Household names such as Unilever, Tesco, Shell, Centrica, HSBC and Vodafone were among over 260 companies taking part in the annual assessment of how business is tackling climate change. The utilities sector did the most to reduce their companies' contribution to climate change. Centrica and Reckitt Benckiser achieved the highest performance scores overall. Financial services, energy and consumer sectors were also high performers for their level of transparency and disclosure, and performance in reducing their contribution to climate change. Powell said the growth trend in the volume of emissions reported was not sustainable. 'We would expect to see the record levels of emissions reported - over 3.4bn tonnes - to drop dramatically over the coming years. I am also convinced we would see this reduction happen more quickly if more UK companies reported their emission reduction targets,' he said. Only 35% of UK companies publicly stated their CO2 reduction targets in the survey compared to 51% in the CDP's recent Global 500 report.
