Gambling police accountant sentenced in £44K fraud

A police accountant has been sentenced for stealing over £44,000 from Police Sports Fund UK, where he held the post of treasurer, in order to support a gambling habit.

Andrew Smart was given a 12-month suspended sentence at Teesside Crown Court and ordered to undertake 240 hours of unpaid work.

Smart was a senior accounting administrator with North Yorkshire Police. Between July 2016 and August 2017 he wrote himself 67 separate cheques to the value of £44,082 to fund his gambling addiction.
