Carbon Fraud – Cops and Carbon Robbers

The crackdown on fraudulent carbon trades could get messy and legitimate traders must stay on high alert, warns Sarah Donald.

During the summer it became apparent that carbon credits – which must be purchased by any organisation using a specified level of electricity each year – were being fraudulently traded in a fashion reminiscent of carousel trading, which became so problematic among traders of mobile phones and electronic goods from the mid-1990s.
