Comment: how big data is changing the workplace

Steve Harry, financial director at Unum, looks at why accountancy firms should adopt ‘intuitive workplaces’ to retain staff, protect employee wellbeing and maintain productivity, not mention attract the best generation Y recruits

A new report commissioned by financial protection specialist Unum urges those in the accountancy sector to drive a fundamental change in their workplaces. Making the right moves to better manage employee wellbeing could help avoid a multimillion pound pitfall.

Thinking about how the workplace has changed over the last 10 or 20 years, we all have anecdotes of how we used to work – most of which I’d bet revolve around changing technology. Every year we see a new way of working become mainstream – having been branded ‘innovative’ or ‘quirky just months before.

While technology has certainly fuelled this revolution, it is not the only agent of change. Another important catalyst is employees themselves. By understanding staff behaviour and mining the workforce for data and insight, employers can create a working environment and benefits package which best meet staff needs.
