Consulting: Brexit boost for Big Four over trade negotiations

Accountants’ expertise will be needed as trade negotiations start following the UK’s vote to leave the EU. Pat Sweet reports on moves by the Big Four to set up full-service Brexit advisory services for clients and potential interaction with government departments

Sir Jeremy Heywood, head of the civil service, has held talks with professional services firms including EY and KPMG, in a bid to meet the demand for advice and expertise in Brexit negotiations. There have also been discussions with members of the government’s professional and business services council, which includes PwC and Deloitte. PwC has said it is ‘ready to help as required'.

The government needs to develop teams of negotiators to handle a range of trade deals with other countries, plus regulatory issues, which will need to be addressed in the next couple of years. Recent estimates suggest the UK currently has around 20 ‘hands on’ trade negotiators, while there are some 600 trade specialists in Brussels.
