Corporate insolvencies return to pre-covid levels

Corporate insolvencies in England and Wales began to return to levels last seen before the pandemic with 1,560 reported in January 2022

The number of registered company insolvencies reported in January 2022 is a small increase of around 4% from the 1,486 reported in December and is over double the 752 reported in 2021, however this is similar to the pre-pandemic figure of 1,515 in January 2020.

The Insolvency Service reported an increase of 122% in creditors' voluntary liquidation (CVLs) from the January 2021 figure of 613, reporting 1,358 in the first month of 2022. This is also an increase of 34% from the same period two years ago. The highest figure reported in the last 12 months was in November 2021 which saw 1,521.
