Company accounts must be trustworthy. This does not just benefit that company, or the regulator, or those of us who are direct users of accounts, but it is vitally important to the functioning of the whole economy. Whether a company receives credit or not rests on the state of its accounts, and employees and suppliers of goods and services on credit want to be reassured that they will be paid.
