Economy at ‘standstill’ ahead of crunch Budget

With just over a month until the Budget on 26 November, the economy has stagnated with the only positive area being pharmaceuticals rushing to beat the threat of Trump tariffs

Following a fall of 0.1% in July, adjusted down since initial figures, only lacklustre 0.1% growth in monthly GDP was recorded in August, saved by the services sector which showed a 0.4% uptick.

The largest positive contribution in the services sector was a 1% boost from administrative and support service activities, which was in positive territory due to a 5.3% increase in office rental and leasing activities.

Although the services sector made the largest contribution to GDP, car dealers and motorbike sellers dragged it down, where output fell by 0.5%, driven by a 2.0% decrease in wholesale trade.
