Editor’s comment: no more scrutiny

Theresa May’s announcement of a snap general election comes at a critical time for the tax profession as the Finance Bill is set to face disruption. Sara White considers the risk of important tax measures being rushed through the legislative process without facing scrutiny beforehand

Once again the Finance Bill is facing disruption as a snap general election called for 8 June will inevitably hit the committee stage of the most important tax legislation slated for this year. So is a general election really what we need? From a tax perspective, definitely not. While it may allow the prime minister to entrench her position, assuming the Conservatives win while faced with swathes of disenchanted Remain voters, the losers will be the hapless taxpayers.
