The former boss of BHS, Dominic Chappell, failed to hand over information on the retail businesses’ pension scheme to investigators despite being asked numerous times, a court heard

The Pensions Regulator (TPR) has claimed that Chappell, who bought BHS for £1 from Philip Green, failed to provide information on the pension scheme despite being asked three times.

Chappell appeared at Brighton magistrates’ court on 8 January after the Pensions Regulator took action last year to prosecute him for refusing to hand over documents concerning two of BHS’s pension schemes, which had a combined 19,000 members.

BHS was bought by Chappell in March 2015 through his business Retail Acquisitions (RA). In April 2016 BHS went bust leaving a £571m pensions deficit, which Philip Green later agreed to pay £363m towards.

Chappell denies three charges of neglecting or refusing to provide information and documents, without a reasonable excuse, to the regulator.

The trial continues.
