Paul Venables is running late. He has just come from a shareholders’ meeting where he has been telling his investors about the fourth quarter results and trading update of Hays, the global recruitment group. As finance director, it falls to him to take shareholders and analysts through the figures while his chief executive Alistair Cox holds his fire for the preliminary results, due out in early September.
