Tackling underlying tax evasion is
a priority for HMRC task forces, but is the campaign working, asks

It seems barely a month goes by without HMRC announcing the
launch of yet another task force targeting a new group of tax-dodging
individuals from a specific trade or occupation. Whether it is restaurant
owners in the Midlands, taxi drivers in York or market traders in
London, it appears there is a task force for everyone.
Funded from a portion of the £917m that the government
ploughed into HMRC at the 2010 Spending Review to tackle tax evasion,
avoidance and fraud, task forces combine the use of sophisticated
detection software, with the manpower of investigators’ ‘boots
on the ground, knocking on doors’.
