Finance Mole: cranking up the thermostat

Finance Mole is settling into his new job until a heated moment with the Collections Lady knocks him off stride, plus Stephen Haddrill, CEO at the FRC and former CFO at Carillion face the wrath of MPs from joint select committees

A few months into the new job and I was feeling pleased I had not fallen out with anyone. I had scrupulously maintained excellent relations with previous flash points such as the HR Director and had even heard noises that I was being considered for a place on the Social Committee. Even an unfortunate incident, which culminated in a cracked laptop screen, elicited sympathy rather than the expected tutting from the IT guy.

So far, so good. It didn’t last. The problem arose one afternoon. I had been for a swim at lunchtime and although feeling virtuous I was also feeling tired.

By four o’clock I felt my eyes shutting and my head nodding. I may be getting old I thought, but not that old. Falling asleep at the desk is never a good look in an office, particularly while you are still on a probation period.
