Finance Mole is making an impression at the new job until a hunt for Pall Mall sets him reminiscing, despite IT failures hitting HMRC its employees are rewarded in the New Year’s Honours list and naming services using initials becomes a trend
Jeez Louise, Bill!’ said my new Boss. I was in my first team meeting in my new job and I was joining the rest of the team in the US by video. I was feeling pleased that I had managed to get the meeting room booked, screen turned on and the video link working. I was still feeling my way around the team politics and it seemed Bill might be something of a weak link. Having spent the last four years very much euro-based I was having to adapt to the more demonstrative American mode of expression.
The biggest challenge had actually been finding the meeting room. Much as I hate to reminisce about the old days, but in the old days meeting rooms used to be called things like Fourth Floor Big, or Cold Room by Canteen, and for the windowless room which only seemed to be used for meetings at 4:30 on a Friday, The Firing Room. Then instead of having functional names, meeting rooms acquired identities that were independent from their location and purpose.
