Former director behind multimillion forex investment scam affecting hundreds of UK investors slapped with Interpol notice in search for missing money

The City of London Police has secured an Interpol silver notice to assist in tracing and recovering assets of up to £70m belonging to convicted forex fraudster Anthony Constantinou, who is currently on the run.

The Silver Notice is a key tool for the police to use to try to recover the millions lost through an investment scam, headed up by Constantinou, the former head of Capital World Markets (CWM).

The company falsely promised investors annual returns of 60% on what it claimed were risk-free foreign exchange investments.

The City of London Police said the Interpol silver notice is a new tool in the global fight against organised crime and was requested by the City of London Police asset recovery team after it received intelligence indicating that Constantinou holds assets in multiple foreign countries.

This international collaboration is intended to support efforts to locate and confiscate these assets, with the ultimate goal of compensating the many victims of his fraudulent scheme.

On 9 June 2023, Constantinou was sentenced in his absence to 14 years in prison at Southwark Crown Court after being found guilty of conducting a Ponzi-style investment scheme which made him more than £70m. For what it is worth he was also given a 25-year director ban, but he remains at large having absconded during the trial.

Constantinou initially turned up at court for the seven- week trial but then absconded in April 2023.

Still on the run, Constantinou was also slapped with a £64m confiscation order under section 6 of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 in June this year and is already subject to an Interpol red notice for arrest.

Deputy commissioner Nik Adams from the City of London Police said: ‘This is a significant step forward in our ongoing commitment to delivering justice and compensating the many victims of Constantinou. We recognise the profound impact this has had on those involved, and we are actively working to ensure they receive the compensation they deserve.’

Members of the public with information regarding Constantinou’s assets or current whereabouts should report this via the major incident public portal or anonymously through Crimestoppers.
