Fresnillo came out ahead of tight competition among the FTSE 100's heavy hitters last night to take the prestigious Building Public Trust Award for its category.

The Mexican mining firm was shortlisted alongside Land Securities Group and Schroders but made the top position ahead of the likes of British American Tobacco, BT Group, National Grid and Capita.

For excellence reporting in the FTSE 250 category, Shanks took the award, beating Balfour Beatty, African Barrick Gold and Inchcape, after being shortlisted alongside Great Portland Estates, and Integrated Reporting winners were the PotashCorp.

In the public sector category, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory emerged as best choice, ahead of shortlisted Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Highways Agency.

Speaking at the awards dinner - attended by Financial Reporting Council CEO, Stephen Hadrill, among several senior figures representing the profession, business and regulatory world - PwC's chairman, Ian Powell called for a plan of action to restore trust in business as this has been eroded at several levels in light of the financial crisis and banking scandals.

'I'm sure everyone is very conscious of the fact that rebuilding trust is fundamental to a functioning, fair and successful economy. We also know that trust can only be rebuilt with clear communication, transparency and accountability, all of these key attributes are reflected in the reporting that we are recognising tonight,' Powell said.

The independent judging panel included Charles Tilley, chief executive of CIMA; Roger Adams, director of ACCA's special assignments; Philippa Foster Back OBE, director at Institute of Business Ethics; Andrew Baigent, director general the National Audit Office; Andy Brough, co-head of Pan European small and mid cap at Schroders; Chris Hodge, FRC director for corporate governance; Robert Hodgkinson, ICAEW executive director for technical strategy; Liz Murrall, corporate governance and reporting director at the Investment Management Association; David Philips, former PwC partner and trustee of World Wildlife fund and Tomorrow's Company; Mark Wade, sustainability and value creation advisor; and senior corporate reporting partner at PwC, Charles Bowman.
