Glass ceiling prevents women reaching top of accountancy

As employers around the world today mark International Women’s Day, ACCA is emphasising the importance of flexible working and training in accelerating diversity

There is still a glass ceiling when it comes to women’s career progression within the accounting profession with far less balance between men and women in higher positions and leadership roles.

Gemma Gathercole, strategic engagement lead at ACCA, said: ‘The skills, perspectives and expertise of women of all backgrounds are vital to ensuring that the accounting industry remains competitive, innovative and knowledgeable.

‘Especially at a time where the industry is seeing a significant skills and talent shortage, we also need to make it more accessible for women to enter the accounting industry, through apprenticeships and skills-focused initiatives.’

A long hours culture can also be a deterrent for women, particularly in more senior positions.
