The latest list of tax defaulters is topped by a goods delivery company that owed £3.6m in unpaid tax, while other offenders include a Subway sandwich franchise shop and a financial services company
HMRC publishes the details of deliberate tax defaulters who have received penalties either for deliberate errors in their tax returns or deliberately failing to comply with their tax obligations.
The list includes tax evaders whose penalties involve unpaid tax of more than £25,000 or cases where HMRC have carried out an investigation and the person has been charged on or more penalties.
On the current list, the biggest penalty is from East Sussex Distribution Limited, a distribution and goods delivery company from Eastbourne in Sussex, amounting to £2.7m on £3.6m of tax over due from February 2014 to February 2015. According to Companies House records, the company is also overdue with its annual filing, which should have been filed in November 2015 and appointed a liquidator at that time.
Another offender is Mark Palmer from Cardiff who runs a financial service company owing £232,000 in tax while paying £87,000 in penalties over a two-year period.
Popular sandwich franchise, Subway, owed £269,000 in tax from a shop in Southall which received £158,000 in penalties over a period of three years.
The list also shows a wholesale waste and scrap business, EAS Metals Ltd, from West Sussex was given a penalty of £443,000 relating to £745,000 of tax owing, while a construction company called Willows Construction paid a £316,000 penalty on £451,000 of tax owing during a one-year period.
The information of the list is only published by HMRC once the penalties are final and cannot be published for more than 12 months from the date it was first published.
