Government accounting shifts towards accrual approach

Within three years half of governments are likely to be reporting on an accrual basis rather than using cash accounting, adding to the overall transparency of accounts

By 2025, governments in 50% of jurisdictions will report on an accrual basis, according to a report by the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA).

Accrual reporting records the economic substance of transactions when they occur rather than when cash settlement happens, which is the accounting treatment used in the UK.

The report was drawn from the International Public Sector Financial Accountability Index, which captures current and future use of public financial reporting bases and frameworks by governments around the world.
