The top corporate donors on the FTSE 100 were pharma giant GSK at £304m, followed by Tesco at £119.2m and global mining company Anglo American at £116.9m, according to research by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF).
Ranked fourth was banking giant HSBC at £105.4m followed by oil giants Shell and BP at £101.2m and £98.8m respectively.
Tesco gave the highest percentage of pre-tax profits, donating equivalent to 11.9% last year. It was also the highest climber in both rankings, increasing its total donations by £30m.
Eight FTSE 100 businesses reported no charitable donations in the public domain, including Associated British Foods, owner of Primark, and Guernsey investment trust, Pershing Square Holdings. Five more companies did not disclose whether they had any charitable activity, described as ‘unknown’, including household names like shopping delivery service Ocado, mining giant Glencore and tobacco giant, Imperial Brands.
